Tree Service Cost Guide for Detroit

Trees provide significant benefits to homeowners, from reducing energy costs to potentially increasing property value by as much as 15%, according to Realtor.com. However, maintaining healthy trees comes with some costs. Professional tree care—ranging from routine pruning and disease management to removing hazardous trees—is an essential investment for preserving your property.

Longtree Tree Service is here to help! To help you plan, we’ve outlined the average tree service costs in Detroit below.

Detroit Tree Care Pricing Guide

Every tree care project is different, with its own set of factors and challenges. Even if your tree looks just like your neighbor’s, the cost to remove it can vary greatly. That’s why we always provide on-site evaluations to give you accurate, customized estimates that fit your needs.

That said, the pricing ranges below offer a general idea of what tree services typically cost in Detroit:

Southeast Michigan Tree Service Calculator Tree Installation

Expert Installation

Planting small trees under 6 feet tall typically costs between $50 and $300 per tree. In contrast, installing large, mature trees can cost $1,200 or more. If you're planting multiple trees at once, many companies offer bundled pricing, which can lower the cost per tree.

Southeast Michigan Tree Service Price Calculator Tree Trimming and Pruning

Pruning Maintenance

Pruning smaller trees under 30 feet tall usually costs between $100 and $500. For larger trees, the price can increase from $500 to $3,000 or more, depending on the tree’s size, location, and the complexity of the task.

Southeast Michigan Tree Service Price Calculator Tree Trunk Injections

Trunk Injection Treatments

Certain tree diseases can be treated or prevented through trunk injections with specialized chemical treatments. These injections typically start at around $50 each, though the total cost can vary depending on the size of the tree and the specific disease being addressed.

Southeast Michigan Tree Service Price Calculator Stump Grinding

Stump Grinding

Removing a small tree stump typically costs between $100 and $300, while larger or more challenging stumps can run up to $1,000. The final price also depends on factors like the stump's accessibility and the number of stumps that need to be ground during the job.

Southeast Michigan Tree Service Price Calculator Fallen Tree Removal

Downfall Removal

The cost to remove a fallen tree typically ranges from $100 to $1,000. While the tree’s size is the main factor, its position on the ground and how difficult it is to access can also influence the total price.

Southeast Michigan Tree Service Price Calculator Home Tree Removal

Tree Removal

The cost of basic tree removal varies based on factors such as the tree’s size, condition, and location. Smaller trees under 30 feet tall may cost anywhere from $100 to $200, while larger or more complex removals can range from $3,500 to $7,000 or more.

Southeast Michigan Tree Service Price Calculator Crane

Crane Assisted Removal

Tree removals that require a crane are typically more costly than standard removals. While exact pricing depends on the specifics of the job, using a crane often adds an additional $1,000 to $2,000 or more, to the total project cost.

Detroit Tree Service: What Affects the Price?

The price ranges provided above give a general sense of what to expect, but the final cost of your tree service will depend on several key factors. These can include:

Tree Size

Working with large trees, whether planting, pruning, or removing, demands more time, labor, and specialized equipment than smaller trees. It also involves greater risk to workers and nearby structures like homes, vehicles, and power lines.

As a result, tree size plays a key role in determining the overall cost of tree services.

Type of Tree

Some tree species are more challenging—or even hazardous—to work with, which can drive up service costs. For example, cottonwoods have brittle wood that makes climbing dangerous, while black locusts are covered in sharp thorns that create safety concerns.

Due to these added difficulties, pruning or removing these trees generally costs more than working on other species of similar size.

Site Accessibility

The location of a tree plays a major role in determining the cost of care or removal. Trees in open, easy-to-reach front yards are typically less expensive to service than those in backyards, where limited access might require cranes, climbers, or other specialized equipment instead of a standard bucket truck.

Extra time and labor needed to haul debris from the backyard to the street—where the chipper or truck is located—can also add to the total cost.

Work Difficulty

Tree care jobs can range in complexity, depending on the tools, equipment, and manpower required. A straightforward task handled by two workers with a chainsaw is generally much less expensive than a job that requires heavy machinery and a full crew.

Additionally, more complex or hazardous tasks often come with higher costs due to the added risks and resources needed to complete the job safely.

Area Hazards

Obstacles near the tree, such as homes, decks, playsets, or power lines, can drive up service costs. These nearby hazards require additional planning and caution, often necessitating the use of ropes and controlled lowering techniques to safely remove tree sections or limbs without causing damage.

Seasonal Scheduling

Tree-care services are often in higher demand during certain seasons, which can influence pricing. Spring, summer, and fall are usually the busiest times, with many homeowners booking pruning, removals, and general maintenance.

Winter, on the other hand, is typically a slower season for tree companies. Scheduling your tree work during this time can often lead to cost savings—without sacrificing the quality of service.

Timing of Service

The urgency of a tree care job can significantly affect the overall cost. When work is scheduled in advance, it gives the tree service company flexibility to plan efficiently, which often results in lower rates.

In contrast, emergency tree removal, like after a storm or when a tree becomes an immediate safety risk—typically costs more. These situations demand a fast response, additional crew coordination, and sometimes specialized equipment to complete the job safely and quickly.

Additional Services

You can often reduce your per-tree cost by scheduling service for multiple trees at once. This is because tree service companies incur costs for transporting equipment, vehicles, and workers to your property. Once the crew is on-site, those setup expenses are already covered, making it more cost-effective to complete additional work during the same visit.

Removing a single tree might cost around $1,000, but when multiple similar trees are removed at once, the per-tree cost is often reduced. Many tree service companies offer package pricing or discounts when several tasks are completed during the same visit.

For instance, you might get a better rate on stump grinding or enjoy discounted pruning for healthy trees when those services are bundled with a tree removal.

Cut Costs by Booking Tree Service Early

Because tree care and removal can be costly, many homeowners delay scheduling a consultation to avoid the upfront expense. However, waiting can often lead to even higher costs in the future.

For example, removing a large oak tree from your backyard might cost $1,800 today. While this is a significant expense, it’s far less than what you’d pay if the tree dies, becomes unsafe to climb, and requires crane-assisted removal in a few years.

The same idea applies to routine maintenance like pruning. For example, a small maple tree with codominant trunks (two trunks growing side by side) can cause a structural weakness. A simple, cost-effective solution is to “subordinate” one trunk by removing certain branches, allowing the other to become dominant and reducing long-term risk.

When tree care is done early—while the tree is still young and manageable—it might only cost $100 to $200. But waiting several years can lead to significantly higher costs. In some cases, the issue may no longer be fixable, and one trunk may need to be removed completely. Not only does this increase the cost, but it can also weaken the tree, making it more prone to disease and decay. If the tree worsens, full removal might be required, potentially costing $1,000 or more.

Bottom line? Reach out to a certified tree care professional as soon as you notice an issue. Acting early can save you money and protect your tree’s long-term health.

Tree Service Pricing FAQ for Detroit, MI

Still unsure about the cost of tree care in Detroit? We’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions to give you a better understanding!

In Detroit, tree removal costs typically range from $300 to $3,500, depending on the tree’s size, health, and location. If a crane is required, the price can increase considerably. Most companies charge at least $4,000—and in some cases, much more—for crane-assisted tree removal.

Winter is generally the most cost-effective time for tree work, as demand tends to be lowest during January and February. With fewer jobs on the schedule, many tree services offer lower rates for pruning and removal. However, unexpected ice storms can cause a surge in demand, temporarily raising prices.

Since insurance policies vary by provider, it’s important to check your specific coverage. Typically, most policies do not cover the removal of standing trees. However, if a tree has already fallen, especially if it caused damage to your home or other property, removal is often covered by standard homeowners insurance.

There are several practical ways to cut down on tree removal costs. One option is to handle the cleanup yourself—such as removing leftover wood or grinding the stump on your own. Another money-saving strategy is to schedule the job during winter, when demand is lower and prices are often more competitive.

We have a very old and sick white willow that I was loathe to cable, but Kyle and Ben explained the whole process. They made sure I was ok to start the project and were SO NICE dealing with all my tree hugger anxieties. Truly they wish to save trees and will do what they can to preserve rather than destroy. She looks great and jobs was done so quickly and they cleaned up so well. Truly a great company, Ben really went above and beyond. Will definitely hire again!

Had the largest tree in the neighborhood taken down. The work needed the best people and best equipment to do safely. If not done safely a home could have been heavily damaged and people could have been hurt. The guys, led by Ben, were excellent. Ben brought a large group of workers who all had their assigned jobs and worked constantly, very nice. The equipment was incredible. I had never seen a boom truck that large doing tree work. The boom truck didn't even have to leave the road and the grinder was ridiculous.

Ben led the removal team and made sure the house was protected and the yard cleaned before leaving. Couldn’t have been more pleased. Thank you!
