Michigan Homeowners’ Guide to Hypoxylon Canker
Known locally as “popples” or “poplars,” quaking aspens (Populus tremuloides) are among Michigan’s most familiar native trees. Unfortunately, they’re particularly
Your trees are one of the most valuable features of your property. They provide shade, privacy, and natural beauty that enhance your home year-round.

Beverly Hills is about 6 miles north of our office at 23800 Eight Mile W, usually a 15-minute drive by Southfield Road or Evergreen. Southfield is your neighbor to the south, so we’re in the area every day.
That means quick estimates, on-time crews and a company that’s close by if something comes up after the job. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day for storm damage.
Before any large job, we plan where trucks and equipment will go, so lawns and slopes stay intact.
Beverly Hills incorporated as a village in 1958 under the name Westwood, the same year Southfield became a city, and it did so in part to avoid being annexed by its larger neighbor. It took the name Beverly Hills in 1959. The 2020 census counted 10,584 residents on about 4 square miles, and the village is home to Detroit Country Day School’s upper school.
The main branch of the Rouge River makes up most of the village’s water area, and it runs through backyards, wooded ravines and low ground. By the time Beverly Hills incorporated, it was already a suburb of established homes, and its trees have had more than 60 years since then to grow. The result is a mature canopy over rolling lots, with a river corridor running through the middle of it.
The village is part of the Birmingham Public School District, with Groves High School, Berkshire Middle School and Beverly and Greenfield elementary schools inside its borders.
Riverbank trees live a hard life. Floodwater undercuts their roots, banks erode and trees start leaning toward the water. Removing them takes care: sections are rigged away from the river, and the roots usually stay in place to hold the bank.
Mature trees also hide problems. Mushrooms at the base, thinning crowns and early leaf drop can point to decay or root disease, including Armillaria root rot, which can leave a healthy-looking tree unstable.
Leaf problems show up every summer. Brown edges, black spots and early drop on maples can come from drought stress, tar spot or other fungal leaf diseases. Most aren’t fatal, but they tell you which trees are under stress.
Ash trees that survived emerald ash borer can still be protected with treatment if they’re caught while healthy. And before winter, pruning out deadwood and weak limbs is the best defense against ice storm damage.
Large trees on sloped lots deserve attention, too. Soil can wash away from roots on the downhill side, and a heavy canopy leaning over a slope puts more stress on what’s left. Thinning and cleaning big oaks and maples lets wind pass through instead of loading the canopy like a sail.
A yearly look at your biggest trees, especially the ones near the house or the river, catches most of these problems while they’re still affordable to fix.
Beverly Hills is the next stop north from our yard, and we see our past work every time we drive through. That’s a good reason to do each job like we’ll be back, because we will.
And we’ll always tell you when a tree is fine and doesn’t need any work. Neighbors in a village this size talk.
Beverly Hills is known for its mature neighborhoods, rolling lots, and stately tree canopy. But maintaining those trees in a suburban environment takes ongoing care and expertise.
Local trees endure Michigan’s tough winters, hot summers, and heavy clay soils, all of which can lead to stress and decline over time. Add to that the effects of road salt, construction impact, and invasive pests like emerald ash borer and oak wilt, and even healthy trees can face real challenges.
At Longtree Tree Service, our ISA-certified arborists understand the unique conditions affecting Beverly Hills’ trees. We can identify early signs of trouble, recommend tailored care plans, and perform removals safely when necessary — all to help preserve your property’s health, safety, and beauty.
Quality tree care isn’t just about keeping your yard looking nice; it’s also about protecting your home, your family, and your investment. Expert pruning strengthens tree structure, improves resilience, and reduces the risk of storm damage, while improper work can leave trees weakened or unstable.
That’s why Beverly Hills homeowners and property managers rely on Longtree Tree Service. From graceful ornamentals to towering oaks, our team brings advanced training, specialized equipment, and a commitment to excellence to every job. This helps ensure your trees remain strong, healthy, and safe year after year.
As a trusted name in Beverly Hills tree care, Longtree Tree Service provides a full range of professional arborist services designed to keep your trees healthy, beautiful, and safe. From mature shade trees that define your neighborhood to ornamental species that complete your landscape, our ISA-certified arborists bring the expertise, tools, and precision your property deserves.
Whether you need expert pruning, pest management, or complete removals, our mission is to protect your investment and help maintain the strength and beauty of Beverly Hills’ urban forest for generations to come.
Proper pruning does more than improve appearance; it strengthens a tree’s structure, enhances your property’s safety, and promotes long-term tree health. Our certified arborists understand how different species common to Beverly Hills respond to pruning, ensuring every cut is deliberate and beneficial. The result is a balanced, resilient canopy prepared for Michigan’s changing seasons.
When a tree becomes unstable, diseased, or poses a hazard, professional removal is often the safest solution. We perform every removal with precision and care, using advanced equipment and modern techniques to protect your home and surrounding property. Once complete, we leave your landscape clean, safe, and ready for new growth.
Trees in Beverly Hills face unique challenges, from compacted soil and nutrient loss to insect pests and disease. Our arborists use a proactive, science-based approach to diagnose and treat issues before they worsen. Whether your birches show signs of bronze birch borer or your oaks are struggling with wilt, we’ll help restore strength and vitality to your trees.
Some trees are simply too large, decayed, or close to structures for traditional removal methods. In those cases, we’ll leverage industry-leading crane equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and controlled removals that minimize disruption while protecting your home and landscape from falling branches or other kinds of damage.
Storms and sudden branch or tree failures can happen at any time. When they do, you need the kind of fast, dependable help that only Longtree Tree Service can provide. Our emergency crews are on call to remove hazardous trees, clear debris, and restore safety to your property — quickly, carefully, and professionally.
Leftover stumps aren’t just unsightly; they also attract pests, hinder landscaping, and can even serve as tripping hazards. But our professional stump grinding services remove stumps and surface roots completely, leaving behind a smooth, level area ready for sod, replacement trees, or your next outdoor project.
Every property and tree in Beverly Hills is different, which is why we approach each project with personalized care and attention. Still, our work follows a proven process designed to ensure safety, efficiency, and complete client satisfaction from beginning to end:

Yes, with extra care. We take riverbank trees down in sections and rig the pieces away from the water, and we usually leave the stump and roots in place so they keep holding the bank. Work that disturbs the bank, the floodplain or the river itself can require a state permit from Michigan EGLE, so we review that before the job starts.
It can be a sign of decay. Mushrooms at the base of a tree often come from fungi feeding on roots or the lower trunk, such as the honey mushrooms of Armillaria root rot. Not every mushroom means danger, but decay at the base can make a tree with a full, green canopy unstable. Have an arborist inspect it, especially if it’s near the house.
Sometimes. If the tree is still healthy, with most of its canopy intact, systemic insecticide treatments can protect it, and they need to be repeated on a schedule. Once an ash has lost about a third or more of its canopy, treatment is rarely worth it and removal is the safer choice, since dead ash becomes brittle quickly.
The usual causes are drought stress, tar spot or another fungal leaf disease. Scorched brown edges point to heat and dry soil, while raised black spots that look like tar point to tar spot. Most leaf problems are cosmetic rather than fatal. Water deeply during dry spells, rake and dispose of infected leaves in fall and have an arborist look at trees that decline year after year.
Prune before winter. Removing deadwood, weak or crossing limbs and overly long branches reduces the weight ice can build up on and the number of places a tree can break. Large trees with weak unions may benefit from cabling. During an ice storm, never shake or knock ice off branches, since frozen wood snaps easily.

Longtree was amazing to work with! Easy to schedule and Stephanie was very informative while giving a quote. Ben and his team very quickly, and relatively quietly, removed 2 huge branches hanging over my roof. I would definitely recommend and use again!Posted on Google![]()

In today’s world there are a lot of companies out there that have sort of a Jekyll and Hyde business approach . The first interaction seems to be a good one only to find out once they have your business any further interactions aren’t at the same level. Well this is certainly NOT the case with Longtree. This was my second interaction and was a much smaller job than my previous tree and stump removal. Nonetheless the way this job was handled from Stephanie coming out to walk me through what she thought should/could be done, to Jane working with me to schedule my job to Rafael and his team coming out this morning to do the work, I continue to be in total awe of their professionalism, workmanship and their true customer first attitude. This is a great company and even better team of employees. Again thanks for another GREAT experience !Posted on Google![]()

There is your injured tree, and the neighbor's injured tree...when the winds of the storm tossed the broken limb of your tree into the heart of their tree...Longtree did such a nice job of dropping broken, dangling limbs into small, safe places amid other landscaping...and doing the best for the neighboring tree to afford it the best chance at recovery...and then there is watching how they ascend and descend as they attend to the trees...it's like watching a performance of the Cirque du Soleil...we are happy, and the neighbor is happy...Posted on Google![]()

Hired Longtree to trim a white birch clump and a large locust tree. We were able to meet with Kyle for an estimate soon after our request - he arrived on time, was knowledgable, and assessed the best service for our trees. Rafael and his crew arrived as scheduled the next week, and were professional, courteous, and knowledgable. They explained what they were doing the whole way, asked for our input, and cleaned up all of the debris. Will hire again, and have already referred a friend.Posted on Google![]()
