Michigan Homeowners’ Guide to Hypoxylon Canker
Known locally as “popples” or “poplars,” quaking aspens (Populus tremuloides) are among Michigan’s most familiar native trees. Unfortunately, they’re particularly
Trees add tremendous beauty and value to your property. But they also come with serious responsibilities.
Healthy trees can provide cooling shade, boost curb appeal, and increase property value. But when trees become stressed, diseased, or unstable, they can pose risks to your home, family, and community.
That’s why it’s so important to work with experienced, trustworthy arborists. And for property owners in Michigan, that means calling Longtree Tree Service.
Whether your trees need pruning, removal, treatment, or inspection, we’re here to care for your trees and keep your landscape safe and thriving.
Since 2019, Longtree Tree Service has been proudly serving homeowners and property managers across Michigan with top-tier tree care solutions.
We approach every job with the same care and attention we’d give our own property and offer expert tree trimming, plant health care, and safe, efficient removals designed to meet the highest standards.
Whether you need precise pruning, stump grinding, or complex crane-assisted removals, our experienced team has the training and tools to keep your trees healthy and your landscape well maintained.
Longtree Tree Service works out of 23800 Eight Mile W in Southfield, right on the line between Oakland and Wayne Counties. From there we serve Southfield, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Beverly Hills, Franklin, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills, Detroit, Bloomfield Hills and Birmingham, most of them within about 20 minutes of our yard.
Staying close to home is a choice. It keeps estimates fast, crews on schedule and emergency response real. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Every city on that list has its own page on our site with local details, from permit rules to the history behind its trees.
Southeast Michigan’s canopy has been rebuilt more than once. Dutch elm disease stripped many local streets of their elms in the mid-1900s, and ash was planted widely to replace them. Then emerald ash borer was first identified in North America in the Detroit area in 2002, and it went on to kill millions of ash trees across the state.
Every city we serve grew in a different era, so their trees are different ages. Royal Oak boomed in the 1920s. Southfield and Oak Park grew up almost overnight in the 1950s and 1960s. Bloomfield Hills was built as wooded country estates, Franklin kept its 19th-century village core and Detroit’s neighborhoods hold some of the oldest street trees in the region. One generic plan doesn’t fit all of them.
Housing eras matter because trees age with the houses they were planted beside. A neighborhood built in the 1950s often has a canopy reaching old age all at once, while an estate property may hold trees older than any building on the lot.
City rules and street-tree programs differ, too, so the right answer in Royal Oak isn’t always the right answer in Farmington Hills.
Our climate is hard on trees. Freeze-thaw cycles, ice storms, summer windstorms and dry spells all stress them, and stressed trees are the first to fail or fall to pests.
Disease pressure is constant. Oak wilt calls for no oak pruning from mid-April to mid-July, tar spot marks maple leaves every wet summer, and Armillaria root rot quietly weakens trees from below. Plant Health Care catches these early, while there’s still something to save.
Local rules vary a lot from city to city. Southfield requires a permit for most trees 8 inches in diameter or larger, Bloomfield Hills reviews every removal, and Royal Oak and Birmingham control work on public street trees. Knowing those rules keeps your project from stalling.
Storm damage is the other constant. Summer thunderstorms and winter ice bring down limbs across the region every year, and older trees with decay or weak unions fail first. Regular pruning and inspections are the cheapest protection against it.
Our services cover the full range: tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding and removal, cabling and bracing, crane-assisted work, commercial tree care and 24/7 emergency response.
Founded in 2019 by ISA Certified Arborist Kyle Phillips, Longtree has grown by doing careful work close to home. Our crews live and work in these communities, and every job is one your neighbors will see.
We’re BBB A+ accredited, TCIA members and fully insured, every estimate is free, and when you call you’ll talk to people who know your city.
Michigan’s climate puts trees to the test. With icy winters, humid summers, and dramatic seasonal swings, trees across the state face a wide range of environmental stressors. Add to that the challenges of compacted soil, road salt exposure, storm damage, and a growing list of invasive pests, and it’s no wonder professional care is often needed.
Fortunately, the expert team at Longtree Tree Service understands these challenges inside and out. We’re trained to diagnose problems early, recommend the best course of action, and carry out safe removals when necessary. Whether we’re preserving a cherished tree or helping you manage risk, we bring professionalism and precision to every job.
Your trees do more than beautify your yard. They also add value to your property, reduce your energy costs, and create shelter for local wildlife. But they can also pose safety risks if not properly maintained.
Poor tree care can lead to lasting damage, costly repairs, or even hazardous conditions. That’s why it’s essential to hire certified professionals like Longtree Tree Service. Whether you’re looking for light pruning or the safe takedown of a towering oak, we deliver skilled, responsible tree care in accordance with industry-leading standards.
While some companies only offer limited tree services, Longtree Tree Service is proud to be a full-service provider that’s equipped to handle everything from routine maintenance to complex removals. No matter the size or scope of the job, we bring professionalism, safety, and expertise to every project.
Effective pruning isn’t just about appearance — it’s about long-term tree health. Poor pruning can lead to decay, disease, or structural failure. Our experienced arborists follow industry best practices to make precise cuts that promote healthy growth and preserve your trees for years to come
When a tree becomes hazardous or has reached the end of its lifespan, safe removal is essential. That’s why we plan each removal carefully and use the right tools and techniques to protect your home, keep your family safe, and get the job done efficiently.
Today’s arboriculture goes beyond cutting limbs, as it also entails providing the support trees need to thrive. From emerald ash borer infestations to soil nutrient deficiencies and fungal infections, our plant health care programs address the unique challenges facing Michigan’s trees.
Some trees are simply too large, too dangerous, or too close to structures to remove without specialized equipment. But that’s no problem for our arborists; we’ll use industry-leading cranes to remove hazardous trees while protecting your property.
Storms, high winds, and unexpected failures can cause trees to fall or become unstable with little warning. Our team is ready to respond quickly to these kinds of emergencies, whether they involve trees that are merely leaning or already on the ground.
After a tree comes down, we can eliminate the leftover stump with professional-grade grinding services. This allows you to reclaim the space for replanting, landscaping, or simply restoring a clean, hazard-free yard.
We can turn the tree we remove into firewood, mulch, or even furniture. This helps reduce waste and make good use of resources.
We can help you pick and plant a new tree that will grow well in the same spot, ensuring your landscape stays healthy and lively.
Our team follows strong safety rules. We use special tools and trained workers to make sure removal is done efficiently and safely.
Our ISA-certified arborists conduct detailed, science-based evaluations to assess the condition of your trees and catch potential issues before they become serious. Each inspection includes a close look at signs of disease, insect activity, structural defects, and environmental stress to ensure nothing gets overlooked.
We take a holistic view of your trees, factoring in species, age, soil conditions, site characteristics, and your personal goals. This allows us to offer customized, actionable recommendations to support the long-term health and safety of your landscape.
Once your assessment is complete, we’ll explain our findings clearly and walk you through next steps, whether it involves pruning, fertilization, pest treatment, or removal. Our goal is to give you peace of mind and the tools to make smart, informed decisions.
Every property is different, and so is every tree. That’s why we build custom care plans based on your site conditions, tree health, and long-term goals, whether you’re managing a suburban yard, a commercial property, or a wooded lot.
Our full-service tree care includes professional pruning, proactive health treatments, targeted pest and disease control, fertilization, and ongoing maintenance — all designed to help your trees thrive in Michigan’s varied climate and soils.
Throughout the process, we keep you informed and involved, offering honest guidance and dependable results. With Longtree Tree Service, you’ll see the difference in the health, safety, and appearance of your landscape.
No two properties—or trees—are exactly alike. That’s why Longtree Tree Service tailors each job to your specific needs, while still following a proven process designed for safety, efficiency, and exceptional results:

Emerald ash borer, oak wilt, tar spot on maples, Armillaria root rot and thousand cankers disease in black walnut are among the biggest, along with storm damage from ice and wind. Emerald ash borer was first found in North America in the Detroit area in 2002 and has killed most untreated ash in the region. Early diagnosis by an ISA Certified Arborist gives you the most options.
We serve Southfield, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Beverly Hills, Franklin, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills, Detroit, Bloomfield Hills and Birmingham, along with other communities in Oakland and Wayne Counties. Our office is at 23800 Eight Mile W in Southfield, and we answer the phone 24 hours a day at (248) 290-9417.

Plant Health Care is a proactive program of diagnostics and preventive treatments, such as fertilization and disease and pest management, that keeps trees healthy instead of waiting until they decline. It’s most valuable for mature or high-value trees, trees stressed by construction or drought, and species threatened by local pests like emerald ash borer.
Trimming mainly manages size and shape, keeping a tree clear of roofs, sightlines and walkways. Pruning focuses on the tree’s health and structure, removing dead, diseased or weak branches through methods like crown cleaning, thinning and reduction. Many jobs include both, and either one should follow ISA standards.

Longtree was amazing to work with! Easy to schedule and Stephanie was very informative while giving a quote. Ben and his team very quickly, and relatively quietly, removed 2 huge branches hanging over my roof. I would definitely recommend and use again!Posted on Google![]()

In today’s world there are a lot of companies out there that have sort of a Jekyll and Hyde business approach . The first interaction seems to be a good one only to find out once they have your business any further interactions aren’t at the same level. Well this is certainly NOT the case with Longtree. This was my second interaction and was a much smaller job than my previous tree and stump removal. Nonetheless the way this job was handled from Stephanie coming out to walk me through what she thought should/could be done, to Jane working with me to schedule my job to Rafael and his team coming out this morning to do the work, I continue to be in total awe of their professionalism, workmanship and their true customer first attitude. This is a great company and even better team of employees. Again thanks for another GREAT experience !Posted on Google![]()

There is your injured tree, and the neighbor's injured tree...when the winds of the storm tossed the broken limb of your tree into the heart of their tree...Longtree did such a nice job of dropping broken, dangling limbs into small, safe places amid other landscaping...and doing the best for the neighboring tree to afford it the best chance at recovery...and then there is watching how they ascend and descend as they attend to the trees...it's like watching a performance of the Cirque du Soleil...we are happy, and the neighbor is happy...Posted on Google![]()

Hired Longtree to trim a white birch clump and a large locust tree. We were able to meet with Kyle for an estimate soon after our request - he arrived on time, was knowledgable, and assessed the best service for our trees. Rafael and his crew arrived as scheduled the next week, and were professional, courteous, and knowledgable. They explained what they were doing the whole way, asked for our input, and cleaned up all of the debris. Will hire again, and have already referred a friend.Posted on Google![]()
