Michigan Homeowners’ Guide to Hypoxylon Canker
Known locally as “popples” or “poplars,” quaking aspens (Populus tremuloides) are among Michigan’s most familiar native trees. Unfortunately, they’re particularly
Your trees add character, shade, and beauty to your property, but they also come with important responsibilities. When a tree becomes diseased, damaged, or unstable, it can pose serious risks to your home, family, and neighborhood.
That’s why so many Detroit homeowners trust Longtree Tree Service. Our ISA-certified arborists provide expert pruning, proactive treatments, and safe, professional removals to keep your trees healthy, your property secure, and your landscape looking its best year-round.
Since 2019, Longtree Tree Service has been proud to serve homeowners and property managers across Detroit, Michigan, with trusted, professional tree care.
We bring the same care and attention to every project that we would to our own properties — delivering precise pruning, safe removals, and proactive plant health care focused on safety, longevity, and the long-term health of Detroit’s urban forest.
From routine maintenance to complex crane-assisted removals, you can rely on our experienced arborists to protect your trees, enhance your landscape, and keep your property looking its best year-round.
Our office at 23800 Eight Mile W sits on the Southfield side of Eight Mile Road. Detroit starts across the street. Northwest Detroit neighborhoods are just minutes from our yard, and most of the city’s northern half is within about 20 minutes by the Southfield Freeway, the Lodge or Telegraph.
For Detroit homeowners, that means fast estimates and crews that show up when they say. And because we answer the phone 24 hours a day, a tree on your house at night gets a response from a company that’s close by.
Neighborhoods like Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest and the University District are a short drive east along Eight Mile.
Detroit was founded in 1701 and peaked at about 1.85 million residents in the 1950 census. The 2020 census counted 639,111 people on roughly 139 square miles of land. Much of the housing is pre-World War II wood-frame and brick, with larger, more ornate homes in neighborhoods like Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest and the University District.
Population loss reshaped the city’s trees. A 2009 survey found about a quarter of residential lots undeveloped or vacant, and many of them filled in on their own with volunteer trees. Meanwhile, street trees planted generations ago kept aging. In 2016 the city launched a program to remove about 6,000 dead trees, and the Detroit Tree Equity Partnership, started in 2022 with Greening of Detroit and DTE, set a goal of planting 75,000 trees by 2027. By late 2024 it had planted 25,000 and removed more than 7,000 dead trees.
Detroit also has one of the largest surviving collections of late 19th and early 20th century buildings in the country, and the trees on many of those streets have grown alongside them for generations.
Old neighborhoods have old trees. Big oaks, maples and elms over century-old roofs collect deadwood and decay, and their roots lift sidewalks and driveways. Pruning to remove dead limbs and reduce weight over the house is often the difference between a scheduled job and an emergency.
Volunteer trees are the other half of the story. Fast-growing weed species sprout along fences, garages and alleys and on vacant lots next door. Left alone for a few years, they push against foundations, garage walls and power lines.
Storms hit hardest where trees are oldest. When a tree comes down on a house, we make the scene safe, remove it and help you through the insurance claim if needed.
Some trees aren’t yours to cut. Trees in the strip between the sidewalk and curb generally belong to the city, and requests for those go through Improve Detroit. We’ll tell you which is which before we quote.
Dead trees near a house are a priority. They get more brittle every season and cost far more to remove once they start dropping limbs.
Crane-assisted removal helps on tight city lots, where a big tree stands between the house, the garage and an alley full of overhead lines. Sections come up and over instead of crashing down.
Eight Mile divides the two cities on a map, but not in practice. Our crews cross it every day, and Detroit homeowners get the same arborist-led care, clean job sites and straight answers as every other customer.
We price Detroit jobs the same way we price every job, with a free estimate and no surprises.
Detroit’s historic neighborhoods and green spaces are home to some of the most iconic tree canopies in Southeast Michigan. From towering oaks and maples to stately elms and ornamental street trees, this urban forest adds beauty and value to every block — but keeping it healthy requires expertise and care.
Detroit’s trees face a host of environmental challenges: freezing winters, hot and dry summers, compacted city soils, and constant exposure to road salt and vehicle pollution. Add in ongoing threats from emerald ash borer, oak wilt, and other invasive pests, and it’s easy to see why professional tree care is so important.
At Longtree Tree Service, we understand the unique pressures affecting Detroit’s trees. Our ISA-certified arborists can detect early signs of decline, provide tailored health care plans, and safely remove hazardous trees to help you preserve both the beauty and safety of your property.
Quality tree care isn’t just about looks; it’s also about safety, structure, and long-term vitality. Proper pruning and maintenance reduce hazards, promote healthy growth, and protect your investment in your landscape. Poor or rushed work, however, can leave trees weakened, disfigured, or unstable.
That’s why Detroit homeowners and property managers trust Longtree Tree Service. With advanced tools, deep arboricultural knowledge, and a commitment to professionalism, we deliver dependable service that keeps your trees healthy and your property secure for years to come.

Proper pruning does more than shape your trees; it strengthens structure, improves safety, and supports long-term health. Our certified arborists understand how Detroit’s diverse mix of trees respond to pruning, ensuring every cut is made with purpose and care. The result is a canopy that’s balanced, beautiful, and built to withstand the elements.
When a tree becomes unstable, diseased, or poses a safety risk, professional removal is often the best course of action. Once complete, we leave your property spotless and ready for what comes next.
Detroit’s urban trees face constant pressure from compacted soils, air pollution, and invasive pests. Our arborists take a proactive, science-based approach — diagnosing issues early and applying targeted treatments to strengthen resilience. Whether your elms are fighting Dutch elm disease or your birches show signs of bronze birch borer, we’ll help restore health and vigor.
Some removals simply can’t be done safely with ropes or climbing alone. That’s why Longtree Tree Service relies on cranes when necessary. This allows us to perform complex removals quickly, efficiently, and without putting your home or family at risk. Our team is experienced in handling large, structurally compromised trees, even in tight city spaces.
Storms and sudden failures can happen anytime in Detroit’s unpredictable weather. When they do, you can count on our emergency response team to act fast, mitigate existing hazards, and restore full access to your property. We’ll assess the situationand provide the emergency tree removal services you need — day or night, rain or shine.
Leftover stumps can certainly be an eyesore, but they also attract pests, interfere with landscaping, and create tripping hazards. Our professional stump grinding service removes stumps and surface roots completely, leaving your yard smooth, level, and ready for new sod, replacement trees, or your next outdoor project.
We can repurpose the tree we remove into firewood, mulch, or even furniture, helping to minimize waste and make the most of the resources.
We can help you choose and plant a new tree that will thrive in the same spot, ensuring your landscape remains vibrant and healthy.
Our ISA-certified arborists provide detailed, science-based tree health assessments designed to uncover potential issues before they become major problems. During each inspection, we evaluate your trees for signs of disease, pest activity, structural weakness, and environmental stress to ensure no detail is overlooked.
We take a holistic approach to each assessment, considering your tree’s species, age, soil quality, site conditions, and your own concerns. This allows us to create tailored recommendations that align with your goals and promote the long-term health and stability of your landscape.
Once the assessment is complete, we’ll walk you through our findings and clearly explain next steps — whether that means pruning, fertilization, pest management, or, when necessary, safe removal. Our goal is to give you the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about your trees.
At Longtree Tree Service, we understand that every Detroit property and tree is unique. That’s why we create individualized care plans built around your specific site conditions and tree health needs.

Generally the city. Trees in the strip between the sidewalk and the curb are city trees, and you can request removal through the Improve Detroit app or at detroitmi.gov. Through the Detroit Tree Equity Partnership, the city had removed more than 7,000 dead trees by late 2024. Trees on your own lot are your responsibility, and we can remove those for you.
Yes. We’ll get the tree off your home or structure quickly and help you through the insurance claims process from start to finish if needed. If it’s safe, take photos of the damage before work starts and call your insurer to open a claim. Policies vary, so your insurer decides what’s covered.
Report it and protect your side. If the lot is city-owned, you can report the overgrowth through Improve Detroit. In the meantime, branches that cross onto your property can generally be trimmed back to the property line from your side, as long as the tree itself isn’t harmed. We can do that safely, especially when limbs are over your roof or near the service line.
Sometimes. An arborist can cut select roots far enough from the trunk to protect the tree’s stability while the pavement is repaired. Cutting large roots close to the trunk can make a tree unstable, so that work shouldn’t be done by a concrete crew alone. If the sidewalk and tree are in the city strip, contact the city first.
Usually volunteer species that seed in on their own, such as tree-of-heaven, box elder, mulberry and Siberian elm. They grow fast and can push against garage walls, foundations and fences within a few years. It’s cheapest to remove them while they’re small. Tree-of-heaven resprouts from its roots, so the stump needs follow-up treatment or it comes back.
