Michigan Homeowners’ Guide to Hypoxylon Canker
Known locally as “popples” or “poplars,” quaking aspens (Populus tremuloides) are among Michigan’s most familiar native trees. Unfortunately, they’re particularly
Why are tree trimming and pruning crucial for the longevity and appearance of your trees? Regular care is essential for tree health. Proper pruning removes dead or diseased branches, preventing the spread of infections and pests. This allows the tree to direct its energy toward new, healthy growth.
These practices also enhance safety. Weak or overgrown branches can pose risks, particularly during Birmingham’s unpredictable weather. Removing these branches helps create a safer environment for you and your family.
Proper pruning is essential for maintaining tree health. Removing dead or diseased branches prevents decay and illness from spreading, allowing the tree to better allocate its resources. This promotes vibrant growth and strengthens the tree’s structure.
Pruning also improves a tree’s ability to photosynthesize. By thinning out dense foliage, more sunlight reaches the inner branches and leaves, boosting the tree’s energy production. As a result, the tree becomes stronger and healthier.
Regular pruning helps prevent weak spots and supports future growth. By removing branches that rub against or cross each other, we reduce the risk of breakage during storms or high winds. This careful approach ensures your trees remain strong, promoting their longevity and keeping your property safe.
Birmingham experiences a variety of weather conditions, including heavy snow and strong winds, which can pose serious safety risks to trees. Weak or overgrown branches can break, potentially damaging your property, vehicles, or even causing harm to people.
A major concern is branches that grow too close to power lines. These branches can cause power outages and create electrocution risks. At Longtree, we address these issues by ensuring there is enough clearance between your trees and power lines.
Our Longtree Arborists are skilled at identifying and resolving potential hazards. Using proper pruning techniques, we remove dead, weak, or overgrown branches, helping your trees withstand Birmingham’s challenging weather and creating a safer environment for everyone.

In Michigan, you can prune and trim trees anytime. However, the best time is usually in the dormant season, which is from late fall to early spring. Doing it then helps you see the tree’s shape better. It also encourages strong new growth in the spring.
Most trees should be pruned every 3 to 5 years to maintain their shape and remove dead or diseased branches. Fast-growing trees may need more frequent trimming. Additionally, safety-related pruning, such as removing branches near power lines, may be required more often. Regular pruning promotes healthy growth and structure, so consulting with a certified arborist can help determine the ideal schedule for your trees.
Rules about tree pruning change depending on the city in Michigan. It is important to talk to a professional tree service that knows local laws and any permits you might need to follow the rules.
The cost of tree trimming in Michigan can change based on a few things. These include the size and place of the trees, how hard the job is, and what services you need. Homeowners should reach out to us for a free, customized estimate.

Longtree did an awesome job. This is the second time we’ve used them and they are professional in what they do. They cut down some large trees for us and made sure the area was cleaned up before they left. I would highly recommend themPosted on Google![]()

Longtree was amazing to work with! Easy to schedule and Stephanie was very informative while giving a quote. Ben and his team very quickly, and relatively quietly, removed 2 huge branches hanging over my roof. I would definitely recommend and use again!Posted on Google![]()

In today’s world there are a lot of companies out there that have sort of a Jekyll and Hyde business approach . The first interaction seems to be a good one only to find out once they have your business any further interactions aren’t at the same level. Well this is certainly NOT the case with Longtree. This was my second interaction and was a much smaller job than my previous tree and stump removal. Nonetheless the way this job was handled from Stephanie coming out to walk me through what she thought should/could be done, to Jane working with me to schedule my job to Rafael and his team coming out this morning to do the work, I continue to be in total awe of their professionalism, workmanship and their true customer first attitude. This is a great company and even better team of employees. Again thanks for another GREAT experience !Posted on Google![]()

There is your injured tree, and the neighbor's injured tree...when the winds of the storm tossed the broken limb of your tree into the heart of their tree...Longtree did such a nice job of dropping broken, dangling limbs into small, safe places amid other landscaping...and doing the best for the neighboring tree to afford it the best chance at recovery...and then there is watching how they ascend and descend as they attend to the trees...it's like watching a performance of the Cirque du Soleil...we are happy, and the neighbor is happy...Posted on Google![]()

Hired Longtree to trim a white birch clump and a large locust tree. We were able to meet with Kyle for an estimate soon after our request - he arrived on time, was knowledgable, and assessed the best service for our trees. Rafael and his crew arrived as scheduled the next week, and were professional, courteous, and knowledgable. They explained what they were doing the whole way, asked for our input, and cleaned up all of the debris. Will hire again, and have already referred a friend.Posted on Google![]()
