Michigan Homeowners’ Guide to Hypoxylon Canker
Known locally as “popples” or “poplars,” quaking aspens (Populus tremuloides) are among Michigan’s most familiar native trees. Unfortunately, they’re particularly

Lathrup Village sits entirely inside Southfield, about 4 to 5 miles north of our office at 23800 Eight Mile W. Most addresses are around 10 minutes away by Southfield Road or Evergreen.
That makes us practically neighbors. Estimates get on the calendar quickly, crews arrive when promised and our 24-hour phone line means storm damage doesn’t wait until Monday.
Because the village covers only about a square and a half miles, every address is basically the same short trip from our yard.
Lathrup Village was designed from the ground up. Developer Louise Lathrup Kelley bought a 1,000-acre tract in 1923 and laid out a community with strict standards: masonry construction, attached garages, curving and geometric streets, small triangular parks and circular focal points. Homes went up through the first half of the 1900s in Colonial Revival, Tudor and ranch styles.
The city incorporated in 1953, the first incorporated community in Southfield Township. In 1998, much of it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Lathrup Village Historic District, covering about 1,200 mostly residential properties. The 2020 census counted 4,088 residents on about 1.5 square miles.
Because the village built out over several decades, its trees aren’t all one age. Some streets have shade trees that are approaching a century old, others carry trees from the postwar ranch years, and the curving roads and little parks put trees close to the pavement in ways a straight grid doesn’t.
Kelley’s planning went beyond the houses. Early residents had a shuttle service to shopping areas, and the community offered auto financing along with home loans. The Annie Lathrup School, built in 1926, is the city’s only historic landmark.
Masonry homes with attached garages were built close to their yard trees, and those trees have grown. Limbs reach over roofs and gutters, and roots push against driveways and walks. Clearance pruning and careful removals keep big trees from damaging homes that were built to last.
Older trees decline slowly. Thinning crowns, dead branches high up and old wounds from decades of mowing and construction are easy to miss from the ground. Regular inspections catch them before a limb fails.
The curving streets bring their own issues. Trees close to the road can block corner sightlines and hang low over sidewalks, and storm-broken limbs often end up hanging over the street.
One more detail: Lathrup Village is its own city, with its own ordinances, even though it’s surrounded by Southfield. We check the rules that apply here, not next door, before any large removal.
Tudor and Colonial homes with steep rooflines and chimneys take extra care, since a falling limb can catch flashing, gutters and masonry on the way down.
Older shade trees in a historic neighborhood are often worth more than any replacement you could plant, so we start with pruning, cabling or Plant Health Care before talking about removal.
We drive through Lathrup Village on the way to jobs across Southfield every week. In a community this small, word gets around fast, and that’s exactly why we treat every historic home and every old tree with care.
We’d rather earn your next call than rush this one.
Lathrup Village is known for its charming neighborhoods and well-established trees. But caring for those trees in a suburban setting presents real challenges.
Trees here must endure Michigan’s harsh winters, summer droughts, compacted soils from development and foot traffic, as well as regular exposure to road salt. On top of that, invasive pests like emerald ash borer and fungal threats like oak wilt continue to endanger even mature, otherwise healthy trees.
Longtree Tree Service understands the conditions affecting Lathrup Village’s urban canopy. Our certified arborists can spot early warning signs, offer customized solutions, and perform safe, efficient removals when needed to help you preserve your landscape and protect your home.
Proper tree care does more than make your yard look nice. It plays a vital role in keeping your property safe and your trees structurally sound for years to come. For example, expert pruning reduces risk and encourages healthy growth. Poor-quality work, on the other hand, can leave trees damaged or vulnerable to failure.
That’s why residents and property managers in Lathrup Village turn to Longtree Tree Service. With deep arboricultural knowledge, advanced tools, and a commitment to high standards, we provide the kind of professional care that protects both people and property, while keeping your trees strong, safe, and beautiful.
As a trusted name in Lathrup Village tree care, Longtree Tree Service provides a full range of expert services to keep your trees healthy, beautiful, and safe. From precision pruning to advanced plant health care, our services are designed to protect your property and enhance your outdoor space year-round.
Strategic, well-timed pruning plays a key role in maintaining both the structure and vitality of your trees. When done correctly, pruning encourages proper growth, improves safety, and increases clearance around your home or pathways. Our ISA-certified arborists understand how each species responds to pruning cuts, helping to ensure your trees continue to thrive season after season.
If a tree is declining or has become hazardous, removal may be the only viable option. We approach every removal with care and precision, using the right techniques and equipment to protect your home, surrounding landscape, and nearby structures. We also leave your property clean and ready for future plantings if desired.
Urban and suburban trees face a variety of threats, from poor soil conditions to pest infestations and fungal disease. Our arborists can diagnose problems early and implement science-based treatment plans. Whether your maples are struggling with anthracnose or your oaks are showing signs of decline, we’re here to provide the support your landscape needs.
Some trees can’t be removed safely without the help of a crane. For those growing close to structures, power lines, or in tight spaces, crane-assisted removal offers a safer, more controlled alternative. Fortunately, the professionals at Longtree Tree Service have the skill and expertise to handle these kinds of complex jobs quickly, cleanly, and without delay.
Storms, wind damage, and sudden failures can create dangerous conditions in an instant. That’s why we provide rapid-response emergency tree removal services throughout Lathrup Village. Whether the tree is leaning, cracked, or already on the ground, we’ll respond quickly and restore safety to your property.
Old or leftover tree stumps can certainly be eyesores, but they are also tripping hazards that serve as a breeding ground for pests. Our professional stump grinding services fully remove stumps and major surface roots, giving you a level, usable space that’s ready for planting, sod installation, or your next landscaping upgrade.

No. Lathrup Village is a separate city with its own government and ordinances, even though it’s completely surrounded by Southfield. Before removing a large tree, check with Lathrup Village city hall rather than Southfield. We confirm the local requirements before scheduling any major removal.
By never dropping anything near the house. Our climbers cut the tree into manageable pieces and lower each one on ropes to a clear landing area, away from brick, stone, gutters and the garage roof. On large trees beside the house, a crane can lift sections up and away. Ground mats protect lawns and driveways from equipment.
Yes. A broken limb caught in the canopy, often called a hanger, can fall without warning, even days after the storm. Keep people, pets and cars out from under it and don’t try to pull it down yourself. An arborist can rig it down safely, and we answer the phone 24 hours a day for storm damage.
Every one to three years for most mature trees, and every year for large trees close to the house or driveway. Have them checked after major storms, too. In Lathrup Village, where many trees are decades old and planted close to homes, regular inspections catch decay and weak limbs before they fail.
Yes. Crown raising removes the lower branches so the tree clears sidewalks, driveways and corner sightlines, which matters on Lathrup Village’s curving streets. A common target is about 8 feet of clearance over sidewalks and about 14 feet over the street. If the tree stands in the public right-of-way, we check with the city before working on it.

In today’s world there are a lot of companies out there that have sort of a Jekyll and Hyde business approach . The first interaction seems to be a good one only to find out once they have your business any further interactions aren’t at the same level. Well this is certainly NOT the case with Longtree. This was my second interaction and was a much smaller job than my previous tree and stump removal. Nonetheless the way this job was handled from Stephanie coming out to walk me through what she thought should/could be done, to Jane working with me to schedule my job to Rafael and his team coming out this morning to do the work, I continue to be in total awe of their professionalism, workmanship and their true customer first attitude. This is a great company and even better team of employees. Again thanks for another GREAT experience !Posted on Google![]()

There is your injured tree, and the neighbor's injured tree...when the winds of the storm tossed the broken limb of your tree into the heart of their tree...Longtree did such a nice job of dropping broken, dangling limbs into small, safe places amid other landscaping...and doing the best for the neighboring tree to afford it the best chance at recovery...and then there is watching how they ascend and descend as they attend to the trees...it's like watching a performance of the Cirque du Soleil...we are happy, and the neighbor is happy...Posted on Google![]()

Hired Longtree to trim a white birch clump and a large locust tree. We were able to meet with Kyle for an estimate soon after our request - he arrived on time, was knowledgable, and assessed the best service for our trees. Rafael and his crew arrived as scheduled the next week, and were professional, courteous, and knowledgable. They explained what they were doing the whole way, asked for our input, and cleaned up all of the debris. Will hire again, and have already referred a friend.Posted on Google![]()
